Brad Blackburn gained his background in traditional art at an early age. Throughout his formative years he enjoyed illustrating and drawing.
He was encouraged early in his elementary education by a teacher to study to be an artist. During the years following and throughout his formative education
he continued to practice, mostly studying the awe-inspiring works of the Italian Renaissance masters Michaelangelo, Botticelli and Leonardo DaVinci. In his junior year of
high school he was accepted to study at a newly developed magnet school for the arts, but deferred the invitation in order to finish his schooling at his home high school. The
year was 1994 and computer graphics were very limited. However, during a visit to the magnet school, Brad was exposed to a very early Photoshop version 3 and was instantly
impressed.
It wasn’t until the beginning of his second year of college in 1997 and the recent acquisition of his family’s first computer that Brad was able to begin designing and drawing
on a computer. At the age of 20 he had spent the majority of his life pursuing an education in the classical techniques of art, and was already a year into his art major. Because
of his great desire to paint, he was very interested in the potential of the Adobe Photoshop program he had seen only a few years earlier. Checking his college bookstore he was able
to find and purchase a student copy of the package. It was only a few months later when another software title in the bookstore caught his eye. He describes the event below:
“I would always browse the software at the bookstore and I came across this great looking box that had very edgy graphics on it for the time. The name of the
program was called Flash, and they had a testimonial from Sony describing how they used the program to develop their website. I had already seen the Sony site online, and at the time
it was one of the most advanced websites around. I instantly knew this was an important program and one I needed to get involved with.”
Since 1997 Brad has been using Photoshop and Flash as tools in the creative endeavor of being a modern artist. Throughout the rest of his college years, Brad freelanced as a digital
artist and web designer, and also worked for several media agencies gaining experience in the industry. After graduating from Liberty University and earning a degree in Graphic Design,
he prepared to begin freelancing once again and also hoped of starting his own design business.
A providential series of phone calls revealed an opportunity to help establish a new creative media department at the university and Brad could not pass it up. For nearly two years, he
had the honor of helping establish the university’s Creative Media Department, initially himself being the only staff person, but growing to a staff of 11 creative individuals over whom
he supervised. During this time he was able to develop over 20 unique websites for the university, begin the development of a 3D version of the campus, and was the chief creative force
behind the development of the interactive “ Liberty Digital Campus”.
“Leading a team of 11 creative designers in developing a wide array of projects for the university was a great experience for me. I had never had that level
of management experience before, and it was great being able to flex my creative muscle and set the creative vision and tone for so many projects. I really enjoyed guiding my staff in the
creative process and having the opportunity to work so closely with the university’s executive leadership and other departments. We were able to do some great things during that time, and
I’ll always count it as one of the greatest work experiences of my life.”
In the spring of 2007 Brad had once again felt
the desire to launch out on his own and establish
his own agency. He had done some freelance work
on the side, but the majority of his time went
into his creative efforts working for Liberty.
Still there was a great desire to take the risk
and go out on his own. By May of that year he
had made the difficult decision to leave and
formally resigned his position. His resignation
came only shortly before the sudden and unexpected
death of his employer and mentor, Liberty University
founder and chancellor, Dr. Jerry Falwell.
“It was totally unexpected and very hard for everyone to take. Dr. Falwell was the university’s greatest cheerleader and our hero, and no one could believe he was gone.
Part of me was glad that I had not hesitated and already resigned, because I don’t think I could have made that decision after his passing.”
By June of 2007 Brad had packed up and was heading back to South Florida. Since then he has devoted his time to formally establishing B2B Studios as a digital arts agency and continues to develop it’s
growth by providing quality, effective and relevant design solutions to his agency’s clients.
